Recent requisition and consolidation of nuclear power plants have lead to major owners with multiple sites.  It becomes imperative to have a unified and standardized system to conduct exercises at each site.  In addition, during an exercise and post critique, data and messages could flow freely on the network between the sites, regional center and company headquarters.  PCTRAN-web comes in time to serve this purpose.

PCTRAN is a reactor simulator specifically designed for beyond design-basis accidents.  Its scope includes severe accidents and intentional sabotage.  Plant conditions following core melt, containment and/or spent fuel pool failure are generated.  Recent development has extended simulation to operate onto a network.  The simulated plant condition is posted live and real-time on the company web.  It is accessible by all onsite and remote technical support and corporate personnel.  Data can be retrieved and analyzed independently at every client site. During a training or exercise session, a client may even conduct its own simulation projections and feedback to the server end instructor or emergency control director.

PCTRAN-Web is designed strictly in the Microsoft Windows environment.  Operation is user-friendly in its graphical-user-interface (GUI).  All graphics, text messages and data are transmitted seamlessly back and forth via existing company website. In the simulated plant mimic, there are icons showing simultaneous containment failure, reactor coolant boundary leak and fuel pool damage.  Post on to the web page client side display, the left column is a strip chart of system activation or component operational log.  Analysts at client sites can click the “Show Dose Mimic” to get radiological release quantity, pathway information and site boundary doses.  Buttons below lead to transient plot and download an instantaneous condition for an independent projection analysis.  A fast-time prediction can be used for evacuation determination and protective action recommendation.

PCTRAN-web provides a modernized platform for emergency training and exercise.  By improving the simulating models and gaining operational experience, eventually it has potential to mitigate real-life events to minimize accident consequence.
